Land of The Lost (film 2009) vs. Land of the Lost (TV series 1974)
Television series Land of the Lost and the 2009 film version, of the same name, were both created by Marty and Sid Krofft, yet differ in many ways. The 1970s television series is notorious for its poor special effects created using a combination of stop motion animation models, projections film effects, simple make up, latex suits, stage props and hand puppets while the 2009 film uses blue screen technology, on scene location, intricate costumes and make up. Although both productions use the same first names for the major characters- the television series had Rick Marshall as a park ranger with Holly and Will as his son and daughter. In the 2009 film, Rick Marshall is a quantum paleontologist, Will is a redneck survivalist who sells fireworks in a gift shop and Holly is a doctoral student with a knack for science and linguistics.
Character Analysis
Will Ferrell who plays Dr. Rick Marshall is one of the main characters in this movie. His character goes through many conflicts through out the movie. His personality type is probably a type five the investigator. His key motivations are wanting to possess knowledge, to understand the environment, to have everything figured out as a way of defending the self from threats from the environment. He goes from very low by not wanting to accomplish anything and giving up to taking control of the situation.(enneagram.com) Then there is Will Staton who is played by Danny McBride, which is a great role for him. His personality type is probably a type seven the enthusiast. His key motivations are Wanting to maintain their freedom and happiness, to avoid missing out on worthwhile experiences, to keep themselves excited and occupied, to avoid and discharge pain.(enneagram.com) Only because he made his own business back on earth but gave it up because he felt more successful in this new parallel universe they discovered.
Setting Analysis
This film first takes place in L.A. in 2009. Then takes a drastict turn and ends up in a parallel universe. It is part desert, looks like the Sahara desert, with its rolling dunes. This desert looks like a junk yard for old, forgotten miss placed things everywhere. It also has a thick, lush jungle with all kinds of crazy species in it. It has huge dinosaurs like T-rexes which tries to conflict with Dr. Marshall all movi. It also has humongous blood sucking insects which almost drains Dr. Marshall dry one night. This land also has the Sleestaks which are an alien race from a parallel universe. It has lots of danger lurking everywhere with no end in site. It also has a humongous volcano that houses one of the creatures of the land the Pteranodon, which is a flying dinosaur.
Plot Summary of the 2009 Land of the Lost
In the film The Land of The Lost, the plot changes very quickly. It starts off as Dr. Rick Marshall giving his theory on time warps on Good Morning America, to the host Matt Lauer. After he is embarrassed and laughed out of the science world he reduced to teaching a middle school biology class. When a student from Cambridge University, Holly Cantrell, meets up with Rick and make him create the tachyon amplifier. Which, is the devise that makes parallel time warps possible. Then they travel to Devil’s Canyon, in the desert, where the tachyon measures are off the charts. Here they meet up with tour guide Will Stanton. They all three go on the ride of their lives. The tachyon amplifier is activated and sends them shooting down a raging river. This is when they end up in the land of the lost. They end landing in a desert resembling the Sahara. Where, they meet Cha-Ka who is a Pakuni or an ape men of the area. As they walk through the desert they fall in a giant sand pit. Where, they end up being attacked by vines and held there for feeding by a T-rex named Grumpy. They end up getting loose from the vines and being chased by Grumpy. The gang ends up making it away from grumpy only for Dr. Rick Marshall to make a comment saying that Grumpy’s brain is the size of a walnut. Which, then ends upsetting the T-rex very much and begins to chase the group again. They end up running into a cave which they use for base camp. Later than night Dr. Marshall has a dream from a lizard-man or a Sleestak which, they are called in the movie. He then takes running off into the middle of jungle after this Sleestak. The others follow calling him crazy and threating to put him down. When they arrive at the the center of the jungle there is sort of temple of the Sleestaks. Where they find a glass pyramid that vibrates and Dr. Marshall and Will start singing in a funny voice. Not much after that the Sleestaks come out of the wood works and start there slow assault to the group. The pyramid then opens and they go inside of it where they find it to be an infinite space. They then see the Sleestak from the doctor’s dream, Enik. He tells them that all of the universe is going to destroyed unless the Zarn is stopped. And the only way to stop him Is with the tachyon amplifier which they lost. So they go on the hunt for it, and end up finding that is got ate by a dinosaur. Dr. Marshall gets the idea to launch an used bottle of liquid nitrogen in to the month of the dinosaur. Which, freezes the dinosaur up thus releasing the tachyon amplifier. Which, as soon as the doctors gets his hands on it a Pteranodo. This flying creature then takes the tachyon amplifier up the top of a volcano. After that Marshall gives up on life he says he is just gonna lay there with his hand in his pants. This upsets Holly very much so she leaves him there and trys to come up with a plan to get the amplifier back. Eventually Marshall comes back and says he sorry through a song and everyone forgives him. The gang then has to climb all the way to top of it only to find the amplifier in the middle of volcanic glass surrounded by the creatures eggs. So the Dr. Marshall does a little dance over the glass with out disturbing anything. After that they rush down the side of the volcano to Enik, where they find out that he is the one trying to find the amplifier to use to take over the world. The gang then tries to defend off the Sleestaks as they are trying to attack them. Holly then gets captured and the Marshall and Will have to save her. They dress up as Sleestak and penetrate their syarmonie. They then save Holly who is trapped in a cage. Then out comes Grumpy and tries to battle Marshall. Marshall eventually ends up getting ate by Grumpy. The gang is very sad after that but they still know they have to stop Enik from taking over the universe. So Will and Holly go to the Sleestak temple where they try to fight the Sleestaks again. They are slowing starting to be overcome by the Sleestaks but out of no where here comes Grumpy With Marshall on her back and they start ripping through the Sleestak army like butter. After all the Sleestacks have been killed off Marshall slides down the tail of Grumpy just like Fred Flintstone. Marshall then tells his story about how he got pooped out Grumpy. The gang then goes inside the glass pyramid to take on Enik. The gang accomplishes this task and uses the tachyon amplifier to open a portal to their world. Will decides to stay back in this world with Chaa-ka because he feels more accepted here then he does on earth. Holly and Marshall go through it back to earth though and become very famous and rich people. Marshall even gets to write another book named Matt Lauer Can Suck It. Propsal
I chose this film because it absolutely hilarious. It kept me laughing from start to finish. This film incorporates the old Land of the Lost, made in the 1970’s, just a little. It throws a new twist on series with its new digital effects, a new plot, and characters. Even though it is not kid friendly like the older series I still recommend it as a great movie to watch. Especially, if like the stupid, funny movies that Danny McBride and Will Ferrell can bring to the table. They are my favorite actors because of how unserious they are even when it is a serious time in the movie. I love that about them. One of them by themselves is always a good reason for me to watch a movie. They always play their character to the fullest. This says a little about me because I do not like boring things. I cannot stand watching boring, long movies that plot is endless.
